FIBER AND PREPARATION
Slub yarns can be made from most tops and roving. Cashmere slubs, wool slubs, silk slubs, fine wool slubs, cotton slubs—the list is endless. It is not possible to make a slub yarn unless the fibers have been processed into top, roving, or batts; it won’t work with airy rolags or unprocessed locks.
SPINNING INTENTIONAL SLUBS
Attach the fiber to the leader yarn on your bobbin. Set your wheel so that it pulls the yarn on firmly. Draft forward as if for worsted and pull the fiber out of the web until it’s nearly transparent. 1 2 It should make you feel nervous, as if it were going to break; leave just enough fiber to keep the thread continuous. Keep your fingers on the fiber and the twist in front of your fingers. Slide your fingers back to the hand that holds the fiber. As with traditional worsted spinning, the twist should follow your fingers back. (Don’t yank your drafting hand back suddenly, or the slub will peel off instead of being smooth and integrated.) 3 When your fingers are back at the web, draft another length and pull just to the breaking point.
